Why Doesn't Bechtel Offer K-Fuel as Option to Reduce Coal Fired Carbon Footprint?
Bechtel is likely under a strict NDA with Evergreen, so don't expect any press announcements to be coming out of Bechtel.

The CO2 benefits of K-fuel are interesting, and an important part of the overall "emissions package" associated with K-fuel. There are however many variables involved, so it would be impossible for Evergreen to make any blanket statements regarding reduced CO2 with K-fuel. You've got to consider the total carbon footprint of the end product. The major variables involved include:

- Fuel source for K-fuel production: natural gas, coal, windmill driven generator, etc.

- Altitude of K-fuel production plant and end user plant (lower altitude is more efficient)

- Standalone K-fuel plant or K-direct configuration (K-direct uses letdown steam from power plant)

- Type of feedstock and native moisture content (30% is typical of PRB coal)

- Type of shipping and ultimate distance to end customer. Trucking is the worst, rail is much better. Downriver barge transport is one of the best options. (i.e., it's almost a "free ride" from St. Louis to Baton Rouge)

- Distance from source mine to K-fuel refining plant, and type of raw feedstock transport

Fortunately the Evergreen team has considered all these important variables related to emissions, so expect them all to be supported in C-Lock's new GreenCert emissions quantification product. Evergreen originally purchased C-Lock so they could be first in line to bundle CO2 credits with K-fuel.

One more thing: Evergreen isn't the only one working to quantify K-fuel's total carbon footprint. Power companies are also busy modeling k-fuel's reduced emissions in anticipation of future environmental regulations.
