3:18AM Greenspan sees house price bottom in '09, critiques GSE plan (FNM, FRE) by Steve Goldstein
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told The Wall Street Journal in an interview that U.S. house prices will begin to stabilize or touch bottom in the first half of 2009. Greenspan also criticized the government support of Freddie Mac (FRE) and Fannie Mae (FNM), saying they should have wiped out the shareholders and nationalized the mortgage buyers. He favors breaking Fannie and Freddie into five or ten private units.
