You might find some info at MEMC's (WFR)web site, seems like I searched for this months ago and found a Japanese wafer manufacturer
that had a good description of the technology and issues, Siltec I think. Search under single crystal silicon. The "tube" is called an
ingot which is ultrapure single crystal silicon. There are
surprisingly few manufacturers, though it is on the 300mm technology
development plan for volume production starting in late '98 and early '99. You might also try the MEMC thread on SI, there are some very savvy process engineers that frequent that site reqularly, and can likely provide you with the answers you seek.
