Liberal blog entries notwithstanding, any person who can draw parallels between McCain and Edwards on this issue is just totally mangling the facts.
I don't know how anyone could have difficult discerning the difference in these two situations as the blog suggests Hannity did (I find this doubtful, actually, although I didn't watch it).
The differences in these two situations are night-and-day.
Most importantly, McCain wasn't running for the presidency in 1980, so it was a totally personal matter. That a presidential candidate, KNOWING FULL WELL this could destroy his party's efforts to win the presidency, would pursue the nomination under these circumstances is the height of irresponsibility.
McCain never publicly lied (and apparently, not privately, either) about his marriage falling apart, while Edwards was asked repeatedly and lied about it. Divorces happen.
And it was, after all, 30 years ago. Edwards was recent. This is a huge distinction, in that Edwards cannot argue that he has solved his problems while McCain appears clearly to have been committed to his second spouse for the last 30 years.
There is just ZERO comparison between these two situations. Hell, at least McCain had the decency to get a divorce, as well as pay support and alimony and give up assets. |
