Paul and thread: Barron's on Intel (continued from previous post).
_____

Still, Intel has left its rivals a little wiggle room. Roger McNamee, partner at Integral Capital Partners, sees dangers for Intel at the low end of its microprocessors line. The company, he says, seems uninterested in selling chips running at speeds below 166 MHz. That provides Intel's rivals an opportunity. "There are some really credible low-end alternatives," McNamee says. In particular, he sees potential for low-cost computing devices," retailing for between $250 and $400, that could allow users to gain access to the Internet via their cable TV lines or phone lines. These devices would run on Microsoft's CE operating system, a stripped down version of the software that runs most PCs. The new machines would be powered by low-cost chips from companies like Cyrix, which is soon to be acquired by National Semiconductor.
