If you think cost is unimportant for sat coms, you are simply mistaken . There is right now a system called Imarsat-C that provides Sat coms over virturally the entire globe.
Cost is 5.70 per minute and $10-15k for the setup.
Set up also is fills a small haliburton attache case.

Was featured, for example, in the Second Spielburg dinosaur movie.
That was real, not fiction. Most owners of larger boats know about it. They are at all the boat shows. They don't sell much. All the mega yachts have it.

Never heard of it?

Its called price, and size of equipment.

Iridium is about halfway between Immarsat C and G* in cost of calls, cost of equipment, size of total equipment suite.
