The missiles in turkey destabilized the region and subs were taking over. Jupiters and Vanguards were the missiles that blew up on the pad and allowed the soviets to get the edge with sputnik.

Jupiter's were the missiles in the subs at the time. They were not as reliable as the later Polaris because of the difficulty of fueling them aboard a sub. There were a few Jupiter's that blew up on the pads in the earlier years, but I think the Atlas did also, both the Jupiter and Atlas became very reliable space launch vehicles.
