The doctrine was in place for 50 years or so (probably for most of YOUR life, certainly mine...) and ONLY APPLIED to the PUBLIC AIRWAVES --- which are owned by the American public, and that are only on loan (&, a free loan at that!) to the corporate broadcasters.

Private services that people pay for (such as cable, satellite, etc.) are not (& never have been) subject to the Doctrine.

But, since the public airwaves (except the ones -- like mobile phone spectrum -- that have actually been AUCTIONED OFF, sold to corporations for their exclusive use) are still owned by the American public, the public (through it's representatives) is free to make any rules that they feel like governing the use of those airwaves.

If the broadcasters don't like the rules they can always quite using free spectrum and go out and buy their own spectrum that would not be subject to the public's rules.

It's up Americans to decide what they want.
