JF, > Also in those days a family could get by on one salary... not these days. Health care was MUCH cheaper. A different world.

So what do you think happened that increased costs of living by so much?

Dual income families help raise the cost of real estate. Nowadays you can hardly afford a home without having both parents work, but then the kids are forced to go to day care, after school programs, etc.

We have many, many more people on prescription medication than ever before. Just about everything needs to be checked at the local doctor's office using the latest-n-greatest (and most expensive) technology. Otherwise, here come the malpractice lawsuits ...

Seems like the causes are cultural. We generally pay a price for a higher standard of living. Then people get used to it and take it for granted. When that happens, privileges become rights, and rights become entitlements.

We live in the greatest country on Earth, yet people whine and complain that the government isn't doing enough for them, or that people richer than themselves aren't paying enough taxes. They even get a sense of arrogance and start substituting feel-good crap for real charity and social responsibility.

Phil Gramm was right. We have indeed turned into a nation of whiners. (Too bad that earned him a spot underneath McCain's bus ...)
