"Nothing in that study pinpoints the causes of increased living costs."

Didn't say that it did.

The Gini has been increasing since the late 1960s. One of the reasons why it has been increasing is that when wages are adjusted for inflation, those at or below the median have experienced declining wages. Now you can make the argument that total compensation has increased when you factor in company paid health insurance, matching 401k and paid vacations.

But, none of those show up in a pay envelope. In addition, health insurance in earlier times usually didn't have a copay. Factor in that houses are larger and more expensive on the average, on average we have more cars and it isn't a huge surprise that a single income doesn't really cut it any more for many.
