Obama's upbringing isn't that much different than your average military brat. Military families and other foreign service families traveled the world during the Cold War.

But the values of Obama's home were very different. His mother was a super-liberal in love with the exotic and disdainful of American culture and achievements. She broke up with her Indonesian husband because she thought he was selling out by working in an international corporation.

Obama's search for his own authentic culture, which he sought in the South Side of Chicago, is his truest inheritance from his mother. He has picked his culture of choice, not birth, like his mother did.
