Just now I was listening careful to Merkel answers to the press in Tbilisi and it seems to me that Putin has crossed the red lines even of Germany. Further she said Germany and EU are determined to bring Georgia back on its economic prosperous path of recovery and teritorial integrity. Armenia, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan will also gain more attention form the EU

Merkel fully supports Georgia and Ukraine membership in NATO something that was never voiced by Merkel so decisive in public.

My read is that in few months Putin will retire after a "great service to the Great Russian Nation" and much more accolades about his contribution to Russia

on the other hand in the dark chambers of the Kremlin and its environs many heads will roll of many less publicly known members of this failed administration including the various oligarchs that supported Putin. St. Petersburg Putin power base will suffer.

I only hope Merkel means what she says and that really this time NATO and the EU is putting their act together, in great part due to tremendous pressure from Poland, Czech, Slovak Hungarian Romania Bulgaria and Baltic Republics etc. and would not dismiss the support in this effort of Ukraine.

My take is that Europe and all the other players were taken by complete surprise of Russian conduct and at first they really believed that Georgia acted as the madman and where confused – Russia made a cardinal mistake entering deeper in Georgia territory engaging in what they do best – pillaging the civilian population burning down houses and homes ruining the port of Poti and blowing up railroad and highway bridges and mining or blowing up what ever they can.

Have Russia stopped within the enclaves they were claiming to protect – the Western Nation would have had a moral problem – but Russia and its army acted as Russia was acting in Hungary, Czech Republic and other places. In their mind Russians where hoping that they can do in Georgia what they have done in Chechnya where the world stood by because the Chechen mistakes, by allying themselves with Islamic terrorists.

So I hope there is light at the end of the tunnel and only time will tell
