The ministry said on Saturday, that the demise of a bilateral Russian-Ukrainian defence agreement earlier this year "allows Ukraine to establish active co-operation with European countries".

And thus begins the counter-moves by Europe seeking a "buffer" between themselves and Russia.. All because the Russians had to escalate over Georgia.

In the long term, I'm not sure that losing any possibility of reconciling with Ukraine is worth what achieved in Georgia.
