"My team wanted these states admitted to NATO to protect them from Russian aggression. "

Your team isn't exactly famous for building consensus. NATO isn't a private fiefdom. True, in the early days all the US had to do was bark "jump!" and the only question was "how high?". But those days are long past. Europe, you'd be surprised to hear, has rebuilt. And, has lain the groundwork for a pan-European replacement for NATO.

Other NATO member had reservations about what Russia would do. Given the present circumstances, I'd say they were well-founded.

How about you?

"Your team looks like a total nitwit on foreign policy issues,"

Only because we understand how the game is played. Diplomacy is about more than Standing Tall and making bone headed decisions. Have you ever read "The Prince"? Machiavelli understood how to play way back when.
