US Immigration Set to Alter Look of the Nation
15/08/2008 by Tabitha Holland

The United States of America is a popular destination for those looking to immigrate, whether legally or illegally. As a result population numbers have sky rocketed to such an extent that the American people of the future could look very different to what they do today.

According to a recent report by the US Census Bureau, population numbers are soaring and are expected to increase even more during the century. This rise is due to the higher birth rate of immigrants and the general increase of new immigrants. It is estimated that the level of immigrants is due to exceed 2 million by around 2050.

With these rising numbers come the ever-changing faces of the common US citizen. Whites currently make up 66% of the US population, this is set to shift and whites will soon be outnumbered by black, Asian, Hispanic and other immigrant races.

In terms of this prediction, the number of Asians is set to triple, while blacks will make up 66 million of the population. The amount of Hispanics is also likely to soar with one in three American being of Hispanic decent.

Non-whites will therefore make up about 54% of the total population; currently these are the ethnic minorities numbering 305 million, which is around 34% of the population.

It is therefore clear what impact immigration has had and is due to have on the US society. With the growth of the immigrant population, a more diverse and ethnically varied country exists and the current and predicted US population highlights exactly this.
