"I think it is pretty obvious they would have defended them for attacking Russians invading their country." The point is that when they mentioned they were going to invade South Ossetia, most of the NATO membership would have told them, in no uncertain terms, not to do it. Because, Georgia being where it is, they'd have to give some sort of heads up if the expected any help. Their likely helper, Turkey, would have had some choice words for them. Note how they haven't weighed in on this at all, despite, you know, being one of the powers in that region? And having actually engaged in military operations with Georgia? Not to mention common interests along with a common border?
