Why did so many Germans follow Hitler? They were hurting and Putin coincided with things changing.

But things are better in Russia......of course, that's mainly in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and not uniformly throughout the country. Of course, there's Americans and Bush....maybe there is an analogy in there.
