Buying oil overseas makes sense because that's where the supply is, and to a very large extent that's where the low cost supply is.

Tim, you know my writings.. You know I'm not a flaming liberal.. But there are hidden costs to having so much of our wealth being "transferred" outside of this country to what are, for the most part, unstable and mostly authoritarian regimes. And it affects our flexibility with regard to our foreign policy choices.

From my perspective, reducing energy dependence means national security. And reducing our trade deficit enhances our economic security. It also enhances our fiscal security since it reduces the amount of USD being paid as interest to foreigners who hold our national debt.

I'm for both increased drilling, as well as some orchestrated government backed effort to build the infrastructure for a transition to alternative fuels, or at least plug-in hybrids.

More generally arguments about money being spent locally to serve the community, usually amount to arguments to restrict trade and spend more. That rarely makes sense.

Nope.. not against free trade.. just in favor of smart trade. I just want the US to have some strategic flexibility in the forth-coming "resource wars" that await us as oil supplies inevitably fall below global demand. Because we know which nations are going to be most likely to be the major antagonists in such wars, China and India, as well as Africa.
