Crisis hits Ukraine as PM accused of treason

PRESIDENT Victor Yushchenko of Ukraine has accused his Prime Minister of "high treason" for failing to speak out against the Kremlin during the intensifying stand-off with Russia.

The feud between the one-time allies over Ukraine's strategic outlook raised fears that Kiev could face political chaos should Moscow seek to destabilise a second pro-Western neighbour, having humiliated Georgia.

Aides to Mr Yushchenko, who has angered Russia by taking measures to retaliate against Moscow's actions in Georgia, said Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was plotting to use the crisis to take over as president.

"The actions of the current Prime Minister show signs of high treason and political corruption," said Andriy Kyslynskyi, the President's deputy chief of staff. "We said last week that Tymoshenko systematically works in the interests of the Russian side. Unfortunately, this information is being confirmed."

Mr Kyslynskyi hinted at a possible secret service investigation of the alleged acts of national betrayal. A spokesman for Ms Tymoshenko refused to comment.

The leadership split has been exposed by differing responses to Russia's assault on Georgia. While President Yushchenko flew to Tbilisi to stand with the embattled Georgian leader, Ms Tymoshenko issued restrained calls for an end to hostilities.
