Dubai tried to grab up all the available builder's sand in the Mideast for construction, hence the feared shortage of Sand in Saudi Arabia. The drastic drop in gold price probably unleashed enough demand to clean out dealer bullion supplies, so more needs to be fabricated.

The indium story is interesting. There's lots of effort to obtain such rare minerals or find substitutes.
