In general, I wouldn't. In this case, there is reason to be suspicious.

Actually, the scene was not in "Gulag". That was a claim made by some on the right to push this little glurge during the 1990s. Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag" was implicated for reasons only the wingnuts know.

So this little glurge is being passed around for several years and then McCain suddenly remembers a similar event when he was a POW. Despite having written about his experiences as a POW on several occasions, and, in fact, having recently written a book on his time as a POW.

As you noted about Kerry, McCain has decided to make his POW experiences a major item in his campaign. And, unlike with Kerry, you think it is unfair to question when he appears to be lying.

What were you saying about double standards again?
