I am concerned about the impact any merger agreement would have on GTE's dividend payout. Should the deal between MCI materialize, would it be an almost sure bet that GTE's current dividend will be obliterated in the face of the incredible debt it would need to finance. Subsequently, would it be fair to say that many mom & pop shareholders would not take this too kindly and be inclined to dump their positions in favor of higher yielding opportunities?

I'm debating whether or not to remain with GTE through thick and thin based upon various factors, and would appreciate any input.
