It is interesting to change EMTAs from ethernet cable modem to USB3.0 Docsis modems with amplifiers that can handle higher and higher carrier frequencies.

USB hubs have built in 5 volt 500 ma power supply. Ethernet does not.

USB frequencies can come out directly from cpu bus(hypertransport pipelines), connected to L2 cache. Ethernet had to go thru other buses(PCI) and PLL deficiencies.

It is important to design EMTAs with newer cpus(large L2 cache and USB bus 127 port outputs.

Main worry is contact resistance problems over time and vibration and environmental corrosion. So, filter circuits, input and output, has to compensate for contact resistance going up(0.1 ohm to over 40,000 ohms) from oxidation of copper in gold plating or other contaminants in environment. Quick fix is coat with vasoline(boundary lubricant) on present equipment contacts.
