A simple... "so far so good" or first stage is a success but it isn't over" would have been a whole lot better.

Actually there was noting wrong with "Mission Accomplished", it was the mission not the entire war. Also it was a sign the carrier personnel put up. Bush's speech that day never said the war was won, in fact he made a point that it was the start of a long hard road. Now this fact, more than any other was not repeated often enough.
