NARAL had taken a neutral position on it. Obama wouldn't have been criticized by anyone on the left for voting for it. His stubbornness on this is inexplicable.

Unless it's like you suggest, he got confused over it early on and refused to change his mind. Which still makes his stubbornness hard to understand.
