Are you clairvoyant? Based on experience and history, there is always something around the corner.


Not as far as the operating systems are concerned. Microsoft is actually making Windows NT lighter, so that it can run on wider range of hardware.

There was a great need during the transition from DOS to Windows, because GUI needs certain horcepower to be responsive. But that need has been fulfilled with current crop of CPUs.

Also, one of the driving forces for higher performance have been gamers. But with arrival of Internet, I think less time is spent playing games, and more browsing the Internet. You don't really need a lot of horsepower for browsing. Most people realize that what they are waiting for is their slow modem, not the CPU.

That can change with arrival of faster Internet connections.
