"Why is Corel getting into the network computer business at all?"
Because they are out of control. I doubt they could get a cent for opting out of the NC, no matter how they did it. It would be one more big write-off, to reflect all the money they put down this drain.
Corel sits on a gold mine, albeit one of limited size. There's no reason for this company to be losing money. They are making big bucks on Draw, Ventura, and WP. They are blowing those would be profits on JAVA, NC, and wasteful marketing campaigns. There are no signs of effective management at Corel at this time. Cowpland is more interested in beating out Bill Gates and pursuing grandiose thinking than running a for profit business.
I sold my Corel holdings after reading David Taylor's post. It finally made me come out of denial. Everything I had read from Cowpland in the six months before that suggested that he was leading Corel down the primrose path, but I didn't want to believe it.
The only hope for Corel to turn around is to fire the current management and bring in some good solid managers that know how to run a small company with good cash-cow products. Like the sales guy at Computer City told me, "Everytime Corel comes out with a WP ugrade, they are guaranteed to make 10 million dollars." What competent business person wouldn't love to run a company like that.
Of course, just IMHO. irv |
