I think biden might cause mccain to counter with someone other than romney. Romney is not the compelling big business type that others might be and his hard right flip flopped stance that noone really believes will work against him. He might get mccain MI, however he may cost mccain more votes in other key states. Tom Ridge with a pledge that he will uphold pro-life position as veep, might work better and counters some of bidens strength among catholics and working class folks in the same geographical region including PA, WV, OH, maybe IN where Ridge is strong.
Biden trumps mccains reactionary anti-communism/cold war thinking regarding foreign policy with a new realism taking into account the new realities in our relations with russia for example.
Putin's recent actions have as much to do with biden's choice as anyone else. If the GA thing erupted post convention instead of pre and obama had selected his first choice, Tim Kaine, Obama might have found himself up the creek without a paddle. He needs Biden.
