Lethal levels of carbon monoxide hospitalize woman

Las Vegas Fire Department firefighters found an elderly woman who lived alone in the western part of the Las Vegas Valley in a hallway filled with lethal levels of carbon monoxide and smoke today about 4:11 a.m., said Tim Szymanski, fire department spokesman.
The woman called her daughter and said she was choking on smoke, Szymanski said. Her daughter called 911 where firefighters responded to the home at 4113 El Camino Ave., near Valley View Boulevard and Sahara Avenue, Szymanski said.
Firefighters had to break into the woman's home and found her at the end of a hallway banging on a bedroom door as if she were trying to get inside the room, Szymanski said.
The woman, whose name was not released, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and then taken to University Medical Center.
The damage is estimated at $50,000 and smoke alarms were working at the time of the fire, Szymanski said. There is no cause at this time, but firefighters believe the blaze started in the kitchen, not on the stove, and flames reached into the attic. |
