Vietnam was a big one. Not only that, it was the gift that keeps on giving. The economic belly flop of the 1970s was a direct result of Vietnam.

So, here at the turn of the century, we seem bound and determined to do the same thing. Only on a grander scale. You could, with very little justification though, claim that they didn't know any better. Not a strong claim, but you could toss it out there. Given that they should have known better back then, what is the current excuse?

They didn't try hard enough back then?
