I got an unexpected call to work last week out of town and just now getting to your post to me on the Indians and their food. I've always had a fascination with the American Indians and their culture. I don't know any around here as they were moved out decades ago. Most of what I have learned have come out of books, even tho I understand that they can't always be accurate.

I agree that life had to be extremely hard for most no matter which part of the country they lived. It may have been better along coasts or large rivers because of the fishing. No doubt its easier getting fish for food than trying to take animals with bows and arrows. Perhaps things were easier after the horse but I don't see how it could have ever been easy. The longest time I've spent in the woods was two weeks. Been on a lot of 4-5 day backpacking trips. If you don't carry it in then you usually won't find it in the woods. Its amazing how barren the woods are when you are looking for food. I know there is food everywhere but its not easy to find and not near as nutritious as common foods we have today.

It would be interesting to have reliable studies on what the life spans and medical records numbers were for the American Indian. Did they live longer and have better blood pressure and cholesterol numbers than we do? What was the most common cause of death? Disease, heart problems, or battle? Do you know of any good books on subjects like these?
