I don't think the "POW aura" is shielding McCain from anything.

The media loved McCain mainly because he was a "maverick moderate." As his support for Iraq proved to be unwavering, the media became less enamored. Finally when McCain became the GOP front-runner, the media lost all interest in propping up McCain, especially when the bigger story was the "first black nominee" vs. the "first female nominee."

I'm pretty sure McCain's marital issues and the Keating Five will be brought up in the months ahead. By then, it won't matter at all whether McCain was instrumental in bipartisan campaign finance reform or judicial confirmations or even global warming legislation.
