Yes, he DID go AWOL Dave. But, as the son of a Senator in the "champagne unit" of the TANG that he mysteriously jumped over 200 people to get in, he got a pass. It gave him "military service", yet kept him away from Vietnam! His superiors covered for him, and where they didn't, Poppy came along afterward and scrubbed the evidence. He spent most of those years drunk and bombed on coke. No one can remember flying with him. Apparently, he didn't even HAVE a wingman.
