Spansion / UTAC fab purchase talks digitimes.com In addition to pursuing sales growth from its core operation, UTAC is also looking to consolidate to fulfill its goal, said Lee. He indicated that UTAC is in talks with two companies for a possible fab purchase. UTAC is looking for companies whose products are highly complementary with UTAC's, or those IDMs that are no longer looking for backend capacity expansion, he added. Some industry sources have identified Spansion as one of the candidates and indicated that a deal between Spansion and UTAC is moving to an advanced stage. Spansion announced in late June that it plans to transfer some of its manufacturing, test and assembly assets to third parties in an attempt to focus on leading-edge product development. Leading packaging and testing houses including ASE and UTAC have expressed interest in these assets.
