The University of Memphis is expanding its technology network to accommodate a growing need for bandwidth.

Memphis-based XO Communications, a subsidiary of XO Holdings Inc. (OTCBB: XOHO), said Tuesday it will provide high-capacity Ethernet services to the University of Memphis.

The company is already the primary high-speed Internet service provider for the university, providing connectivity through a 500-mile fiber network. Now, the company will provide Internet speeds of 1 gigabit per second to “support the growing Internet connectivity requirements of the university’s faculty and student body,” XO said in a statement.

“As the University of Memphis expands its research and teaching agenda, high-speed Internet services are vital to high performance research computing in the physical and health sciences, to the students and faculty engaged in our innovative and distance learning programs, and to our connection with a variety of community partners,” said Doug Hurley, vice president for information technology and chief information officer at the university.

Said Mark Reavis, director of network services at the university: “The increased usage of the Internet for communications and research has put higher demands on our networking infrastructure.”

XO Communications is a provider of advanced communications services and solutions. It offers customers managed voice, data and IP services.
