Power is mostly an illusion: nobody can control much for long.

But think of this: I could have gone to see the Olympics last week. Most people in China were under intense scrutiny if they had such a desire and the means.

Imagine if the Olympics were in LA instead. Again, I could easily have gone. Just buy a ticket and go. How many Chinese with the money would have been permitted?

For all your disparagement about freedoms in the US, which have eroded in the past 6 years, we still have far more real freedoms that most. For example, we can bitch about it on these boards, can't we? <g>
