Interesting, too, but the greco-roman platform is designed to send a message to millions so I think it is far more important.

A black man, though not one himself, representing former slaves, speaking to a nation and indeed to the world from a platform suggesting something imperial while rejecting empire via his opposition to the Iraq war, all while leading viewers to recall a Caesar. And that can be seen in any number of ways. Hubris and arrogance mixed with a message inconsistent with the setting will result in a very complex, very mixed reaction to the speech.

I think the designers were trying to invoke the roots of the best of Western civilization and somehow conflating Obama with them.

I think they achieved a hopelessly mixed result.

Toga, toga! Indeed.

The platform really muddles the message, complicates it tremendously. I think the media will instinctively recognize this and minimize its depiction of the setting.
