I guess it was more about firing up the base than about appealing to the independent or middle-of-the-road voters. Sounds like McCain is worried that he can't even attract base voters to the poll. Otherwise, why such a strategic blunder at this point in the race?

Hard to figure. I think he hit the panic button. We'll see how it plays out...
