I noticed MSNBC turns down the volume when the crowd applauds compared to CNN and Fox.

I was switching back and forth and concluded that CNN used "tinnier" sounding microphones vs. Fox. Actually, they probably just turned down the bass and boosted the treble in the studio. Try switching and see if you can hear the difference.
