I was in Virginia City Montana for a few days. Chinese miners were not allowed to hold gold claims in the placer fields there, but they were permitted to rewash all the tailing piles and did quite well at it. The story goes that they had tunnels there to move about unmolested, as Chinese were not considered human beings at the time and could be shot without consequence. There does not seem to be much of a record on how often that happened.
