RWE has announced plans to build a large-scale power plant with integrated gasification combined-cycle and CO2 capture, transportation and storage technology. The new power plant, which will be fueled by local lignite resources, will be constructed on the Goldenbergwerk site in Huerth near Cologne, Germany.

RWE has said that around E2 billion will be required for this integrated gasification combined-cycle turbine (IGCT) plant with its 450MW capacity, pipeline and storage facility. RWE has already committed E1 billion for this purpose.

RWE Dea plans to investigate suitable CO2 storage locations in Schleswig-Holstein. In order to transfer the CO2 from the power plant site in the Rhineland mining district to these storage locations in the north of Germany, RWE Dea plans to build a climate protection pipeline.

Juergen Grossmann, CEO of RWE, said: "We will do everything in our power to ensure this innovative project is now swiftly expedited. With our expertise in clean power technologies, we want to show the energy to lead in this field."
