He converted or rather lets say joined in Chicago just before he was going to run for Senate for Illinois. It was suggested by a Chicago friend, as Obama himself wrote, that he should join a church if he was going to be working with people in Southside This is known as political expediency. It was a resume item then and now is a negative resume item.
