It was a totally absurd waste of money. Ketchikan is just a little town with a couple jet flights a day. They have a perfectly adequate ferry, which I've used while traveling there.

The bridge had to be very high to allow cruise ships to pass under. This made it subject to frequent wind closures, which meant they had to keep the ferry as a fallback. It was nuts.

That's why Alaskans like Sarah. She booted out the scorned Frank Murkowski, who really wanted the bridge. His family even owned land on the island that would have benefited.

After she was elected it took a while to put in her new management team and figure out what to do, but eventually she did kill it. I think she really deserves the credit, but just didn't explain it very well.
