The article is half right - yes the US should have done better and be more patient with Russia integration into the west, during the Clinton administration.

Would agree that the destruction of Russian economy has a lot to do with Clinton ill conceived policies of forcing Yeltzin to accept the brute concept of capitalism at a time that the US should have known that shock therapy will not work.

It also proves how ignorant the Clinton administration was toward the social fabric of the former USSR and more specifically Russia.

Clinton administration mistakes brought about that the head of this country Russia is now a KGB graduate who brought with him fellow KGB staff to power with the old Russian desire of power and influence by brute force - same policies that the Tsarist Russia practiced for ages and the Communist Regime afterward.

Many forget that Yeltzin did represent a much more democratic regime and the US failed to nurture and assist in a positive way the efforts of Yeltzin administration with all the pitfalls Yeltzin had and they where many.

The meteoritic rise of the “Oligarchs” should have been a red light to the Western Democracies that not all is well in Russian and the population at large are being robbed and plundered in the name of capitalism and so called "free markets".

The seeds of resentment of the capitalist social order without any social safety net germinated the disdain of all what Westerners where perceived to represent, and was a direct result of the failed policies of the EU and the Clinton administration toward Russia – which in turn gave rise to nostalgia within the ordinary Russian population to the all powerful dictatorship and the ability of the former disfranchised KGB tugs to gain power and kick out Yeltzin and others nascent and failed democracy.

In a way the process that brought Putting tugs do power was very similar to the gain of power by the Nationalistic party in Germany, which germinated during a period of very high inflation, great economic hardship of the population and social degradation of the population at large after WWI

Many during the Yeltzin period where trying very hard to build a true democracy but where slowly tossed aside by the all powerful narrow minded and brutaly selfish oligarchs and former KGB forces, with the promise of “order and safety”

Unfortunate neither the EU or the Clinton administration cared very much about the plunder that was going on within Russia by Russians – which proves how narrow minded the Clinton and EU administrations were (may be he was too busy with Monika).

In 1996 I was Washington meeting high placed US officials related to some project in the CEE countries geared toward former USSR and got a cold shoulder - a very clasic but mistaken approach.

The Bush administration fared not much better but was faced with facts on the ground that could not be changed, but still bear some of the blame - Putin gang was already in power and Bush started courting the worng person - Vladimir

Now we are sowing the results of the Clinton administration mistakes with “the icing” of the Bush administration mistakes

The issue is much more complicated than the article tries to point out and lack of understanding to date will make the world a place that will be worse off.

All the solutions that may bring to a resolution are bad for all the participants and we will need to adapt to live and a much more dangerous world with the treat of "Damocles Sword" hanging over our heads.

A miracle may happen - and this would be only if the EU CEE and the US will be united - in the meantime China would have not wished for a better constellation of events and for sure will milk as much benefits as they can form the present situation – but them themselves are playing a dangerous game with the unrest in Tibet and Xinjiang.

It is my hope that China will be more foresighted than some EU countries and ally itself to contain the new desire of Russian expansion
