They post to each other because the need to belong to something is a fundamental human drive. The responses they get from each other (the patting on the back stuff) validates a sense of value as a member of something, even though the message is negative and destructive. It's the same reason preachers preach to their choir members who already know the message and then everyone shares communion and feasts together, but in this case the message is usually constructive and nourishing so it confirms their sense of self worth and goodness.

Debates or confrontations with people who hold opposing outlooks on life rarely, or maybe never, results in changing the other persons views. I am not operating under any such illusion. The point, is to test yourself and when you find yourself getting thrown for a loop, shake off the dust and get back up on the one that threw ya. Success on these threads occurs when you identify significant topics to discuss, accept reasonable challenges, perform according to the standards of decency you believe are good, and grow as a person. Kicking SeachRE's butt or biscuit's is easy and is usually a relatively meaningless exercise in and of itself. They ask for it because they know their conduct is despicable and they need to know there are decent people in the world who notice. Getting their butts kicked on these threads is the closest thing they have left to someone showing they care about them. A couple of sad sacks, those two.
