Not my gut, not statistics but from what has happened in the past with respect to the primaries etc. The grass roots movement that that Team Obama has been doing has been unprecedented. Besides, the African-American factor is in play in an unprecedented way. And finally the Independents. McCain has diminished his following amongst Independents with his pandering to the right wing through the choice of Palin. It is a combined set of issues that tells me the dynamics are very different than just red and blue. There were no statistics to prove that Bush would win in 2000. And the gut at that time said that Gore could not lose because of the Clinton prosperity.
