There is less arctic ice coverage than in 1979 (which would be expected, in addition to any longer term warming, the 70s where a relatively cold decade), but there is about 10% more coverage than least year (which admittedly was a low since they started keeping detailed records)

In the Antarctic the ice coverage has been increasing in recent years.
