Winning the war in iraq is seemingly happening according to NYT reporter Dexter Filkins. I posted his article twice yesterday with no comments. My view is that despite the deceptions in getting into this war not to mention the gross incompetence of this admin in fighting this war, if we are somehow able to pull off a victory in iraq, this could constitute a major victory and trap al quaeda in its hole in wahiristran where if we play our cards right they will wither and die.

There is a saying that victory has 1000 fathers (and followers), defeat is an orphan. Defeating AQ on any and all battlefield is supremely important.

Leaving the battlefield as Obama (and John Fowler and others here advocated) would have created triumph for AQ, one we would have had to deal with for generations (longer than the Cold War).

Beloved arabia has rejected them and defeated them. Not us but sunni arabs. That could be the biggest story to come out of the war. Both mccain and obama need to take this into account. McCains 100 year stay not necessary and obamas 14 month pullout may need some tweaking.

But it was surely facilitated by the US, Bush and McCain in particular. The US paid for it in blood, treasure. Application of some pressure and arm twisting helped as well.

While AQ may pull off something in the future, their abilities are severely limited by lack of safe harbor...
