Michael,

The point that i made when first posting the filkins story was that despite dishonesty on getting in to the war and gross incompetence in fighting it, history still might judge the iraq war as the single most important thing we have done in this time. I think the left got it part right talking about timetables and putting pressure on the iraqis and i think the right got it part right in exhibiting the stubborness needed to continue when things were so bleak.

As far as putting pressure on Iraqi's to "grow up", that's a good point, but like parents in relation to their children, you don't pull the rug from under them before they are ready to fend for themselves.

The parents want their children to succeed. The left didn't really want the Iraqi government to succeed. They place their ability to say "See, I told you" before the interest of the country. BTW, I am kind of impressed by McCain's "Country First" slogan. I hope the full meaning of the slogan will sink in - what it says about him, and what it says about his opponent(s).
