The point that i made when first posting the filkins story was that despite dishonesty on getting in to the war and gross incompetence in fighting it, history still might judge the iraq war as the single most important thing we have done in this time.

I made that point years ago when we got into the war and was laughed right off this thread. I have subsequently made the point in the last few months with a similar reaction.

The fact is that these events cannot be judged within a few months or years of the success; it will be decades before it is known how this played out. However, conceptually, it looks like the Bush administration was both brilliant with the original plan and heroic in its willingness to stick with it in the face of amazing criticism by incompetent commentators.

There was no real deception. There was definitely mishandling of the war during the middle portion. But clearly, Bush's commitment turned it around and history will credit him with this I believe.

Long term, the benefits of having placed a democracy in the center of the ME cannot be overestimated. It will be huge. For many years to come -- IF, and it is a big IF, the situation stablizes as it now appears it will.
